President Rick Sapio called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. 21 members were present. Rick introduced Michael Venuto, of the Delaware River Port Authority, our guest speaker.
GUEST SPEAKER
Michael Venuto spoke extensively about the Delaware River Port Authority, their four long span bridges and commuter rail line between Philadelphia and South Jersey. He presented a detailed
overview of the total transportation system built and operated by the Port Authority.
He then focused on the recent, extensive re-decking of the Walt Whitman Bridge. He said that the deck replacement of the suspended and two anchorage spans cost $140 million. They are using light weight concrete for the new deck. The supporting 16 stringers were replaced with 18 new steel stringers. Field fit of these new stringers was essential to the work flow.
Mike showed us photos and spoke extensively about the special gantry crane installed to run on rails atop the stiffening trusses. This crane was essential for working while the bridge was operative with road traffic. The contractor could cut and remove sections of the deck with reduced traffic on the bridge. Peak and off peak traffic times determined the work schedule.
Mike closed with answers to many interesting questions from the audience.
President Rick thanked Mike for the interesting and informative presentation.
