November 12th Meeting Minutes

SURVEYORS’ ASSOCIATION OF
WEST JERSEY
November 12, 2009
MINUTES OF MEETING
Carlucci’s Waterfront
876 Centerton Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054

President Bill Haggerty called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM. 17 members and 2 guests were present.

GUEST SPEAKER
President Bill introduced our guest speaker, Ken Hayes of Aqua Survey Inc., Flemington, New Jersey. Ken spoke about many unusual projects that they have done. Consistent with their name, Aqua Survey, most of their projects were over deep water using boats and high tech equipment. This specialized work took them to many far-off locations, including Mexico, Catalina Island off the coast near Los Angeles, Honolulu, Egypt, and Korea. Their treasure-hunting often required geophysical-surveying and accurate-positioning methods. They developed two new patents for a plastic core barrel with a sensor to determine if metal was nearby.

Ken spoke about searching underwater for: lost bombs, canisters of mustard gas, lost precious metals including coins and silver bars. These treasure-hunt-stories were particularly interesting. He told us of finding some Cleopatra pottery, underwater-art, and three lost cities now submerged near Egypt.

Anther interesting project that Ken told us about was a contract for the Korean Government. They were seeking to locate an antique “Turtle Ship”, from about the year 1592. Korea wants to recover and preserve it as a museum exhibit. Ken also passed around some old relics, including: gold coins and a 400 year-old forged-iron gun (harquebus). Ken closed with questions from the audience President Bill thanked Ken for a very interesting presentation.

At 9 PM President Bill re-convened the business meeting.
