SURVEYORS’ ASSOCIATION OF
WEST JERSEY
JULY 09, 2009
MINUTES OF MEETING
Carlucci’s Waterfront
876 Centerton Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054
Vice President Rick Sapio called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM. There were 16 members and guests present.
GUEST SPEAKER
Vice President Rick Sapio announced that he was substituting for our President Bill Haggerty, who was unable to attend tonight. Rick said we would first hear from our guest speaker, Jesse Kozlowski, Director of Surveying Technology at Taylor Wiseman and Taylor. Jesse’s talk was entitled,“True Meridian Lines in New Jersey.” He spoke about his personal investigation of the stone pillars that were installed in several locations in the mid 1800’s so that surveyors could test their compasses and more accurately coordinate their survey bearings.
Jesse spoke about his project as a work still in process. He showed photographs of these massive stone pillars which are reported to extend 8 feet into the ground. He used GPS to determine the latitude and longitude of each existing pier. His measurement confirmed some of the engraved information but raised questions about other engraved markings. Jesse still seeks additional information to answer some perplexing features of his study.
During his gathering of information he obtained a copy of an interesting document entitled SAWJ Proceedings, dated 1880. This historical document was helpful in his investigation. Jesse opened the floor to many comments and questions from the membership.
At 8:35 PM, Rick Sapio thanked Jesse for the interesting presentation on “Meridian Lines” and returned the meeting to our association business issues.
